Our Story
The Dictionary Game started with a simple observation: most of us look up a word, read the definition, and forget it within the hour. The words that actually stick are the ones we had to work for — the ones we puzzled over, guessed at, and got wrong before we got right.
So we built a game around that idea. Instead of handing you a definition to skim, we hide the word and let the definition be the clue. Every puzzle is a small act of detection, and the moment of "oh, THAT word" is exactly the moment the word becomes yours.
What began as a single daily puzzle has grown into a full word-lover's toolkit: five difficulty levels, a Word of the Day dedicated to obscure and forgotten English, an archive of every past puzzle, a growing vocabulary blog, and a complete Spanish edition.
How We Choose Our Words
Every puzzle word is drawn from a curated dictionary database and checked against word-frequency data, so easier levels genuinely use common words and harder levels genuinely stretch you. Clues are taken from real dictionary definitions and reviewed so they never contain the answer itself, a close relative of it, or a proper noun.
The Word of the Day follows a different philosophy: it champions the neglected corners of English — archaic, obsolete, and delightfully specific words that deserve a second life. Each one comes with its origin story, because knowing where a word came from is half the fun of knowing it.
Who Plays
Students preparing for exams, professionals sharpening their communication, crossword enthusiasts warming up for the morning puzzle, English learners building vocabulary in two languages, and families who've made the daily game a breakfast-table ritual. If you love words — or want to — you'll fit right in.
